Transport & Tour Options
Travelling around the Waitaki District is easy.
Buses, large and small, move travellers through the district every day. Some coach companies, like Kiwi Experience, allow travellers to cycle and ride and stop at some of the region’s most scenic spots. The Southern Express and the Atomic Shuttle stop in Oamaru and Palmerston. Please note that during winter there are no bus companies travelling SH83 (Waitaki Valley) to Omarama and Mount Cook as the roads are often snow bound.
Rental Car hire is recommended should you wish to take a more leisurely trip, or to get you to out of the way places, such as the hydro dams, the numerous historic walking trails, or to Moeraki Village which is just off SH1 about 25 minutes south of Oamaru. There are a number of rental companies operating out of Christchurch airport.
Hiring a Motor Home or Campervan is also a great option so you can take your time exploring the charms of the Waitaki District and other parts of Otago. Pick one up at Christchurch airport before you head south.
