About our Region The Waitaki District is located on the east coast of the South Island about midway between Christchurch and Dunedin. The district covers 714,805 hectares of land from the Southern Alps in the west down the Waitaki Valley to Oamaru on the coast and south to Palmerston. The district stretches some 230km from north to south and encompasses 150km of coastline as well as the mighty Waitaki River at our northern boundary. The 45th parallel which marks the midway point between the equator and the South Pole is located at the northern entrance to Oamaru. Famed for its diverse landscapes, the Waitaki District and Oamaru offers visitors unique wildlife experiences, an opportunity to take a step back in time to relive the heady days of the Victorian era as well as the chance to view prehistoric fossils and Maori Rock Art. The same agricultural opportunities that attracted our first settlers remain the main driver industry today with fresh opportunities developing in tourism, niche manufacturing and secondary processing areas. This has spurred a vibrant community of entrepreneurs, artisans and craftspeople and is increasingly viewed as one of the best places in New Zealand to live, work or visit. Recreational opportunities abound, the lifestyle is laid back and the locals friendly and ready to make your stay memorable from start to finish.
