Totara EstateA unique and significant heritage attraction, Totara Estate, 8km south of Oamaru, is the site where New Zealand’s first shipment of frozen meat was prepared and sent to the other side of the world back in 1882. Today that daring dream is worth $5 billion and is the country’s most famous export industry. We invite you to share in a great New Zealand story told with new audio-visual displays as you journey through original Oamaru stone farm buildings and hundreds of heritage display items. Relive early pioneer life on the big Estate. See (and feed) early NZ sheep breeds. Take a walk to the nearby historic Brydone Monument (a tribute to these early bold visionaries). And after, browse in our shop for that special reminder of a unique place, or relax in our picnic area and let the history sink in. Entry fees: $7 Adult, $2 Student, $15 Family, Concessions apply. Guided tour options available on request. Opening Hours: Totara Estate
