Museums And Galleries

Many of Oamaru’s visitor attractions are based around our unique history. Those stories, both pre European and European, are carefully presented at the North Otago Museum. Notable permanent displays include the Ka Taoka o Moeraki and the Willetts’ Waitaha collection.

The district’s agrarian history is showcased at Totara Estate — the birthplace of New Zealand’s frozen meat industry.

The Forrester Gallery offers a varied exhibition programme, houses a growing number of regionally and nationally significant artworks and is based in one of the town’s finest historic Oamaru Stone buildings.

Smaller niche galleries are also found in Oamaru at the Grainstore Gallery, the North Otago Art Society rooms, the Omru Blue Gallery, at Gallery Picture Farming and in the former Railway Station building.
