The Alps to Ocean Cycle trail is currently being built and expected opening will be in 2012. For over 300km and dropping 780m, visitors will experience some of the most unique and stunning scenery New Zealand has to offer.
From the base of Aoraki Mt Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain, the trail will wind down the MacKenzie basin to Lake Ohau pass through Omarama and then take in hydro dam lakes and surrounding mountains. Through the Waitaki Valley passing Otematata, Kurow and Duntroon riders will experience vineyards, rivers, rolling farmland, limestone cliffs and Maori rock art. Turning off at Duntroon the trail goes past Elephant Rocks and through intense farmland before arriving at the coast and Oamaru. The trail will be a Level 2 ride designed for all abilities and ages. The trail could be done in segments to allow for those who only have a short time, but the true experience will always be from Alps to Ocean.
