Graves Track

In the 1920s Oamaru Solicitor and explorer William G. Grave laboured for seven years, often on his own, to form a track around Cape Wanbrow at the edge of Oamaru's Historic Harbour.  The cliff was so steep in places that he had to lower himself from the cliff top by rope to work.  The track was eventually completed using gang labour during the Depression of the 1930s.

The first part of Graves Track stretch from the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony to Boatman's Harbour.  Fur seals often lie near the track entrance, so please proceed carefully.  Along the track are magnificent views across Oamaru Harbour and out to sea.  The WWII Oamaru Coast Defence Camp, well worth exploring, is on the top of Cape Wanbrow; a path to it heads up the hill part way along the track.  Spotted Shags nest in the cliff above Boatman's Harbour; these birds rest on the wharves in the main harbour during the day.  At Boatman's Harbour are rare pillow lava columns from an under-sea volcano which erupted 40-50 million years ago.  At that time Oamaru was up to 60 metres under the ocean surface

Distance: .50km one way

The second part of Graves Track can be accessed only during low tied.  From Boatman's Harbour the track goes around a headland and down to the water's edge.
