Totara EstateEstablished in the 1850s, Totara Estate was important for producing quality sheep, cattle and grain. In 1882, the first shipment of frozen meat originating from the estate was sent from Port Chalmers to England signalling an exciting new chapter in New Zealand’s meat export history. The New Zealand Historic Places Trust bought the buildings in 1980 which were restored by Meat and Wool New Zealand and opened to the public in 1982 – the centennial of the first historic shipment. Today Totara Estate features a collection of buildings, interactive displays and a theatrette which collectively allow visitors to learn about the estate, the people who lived and worked there and the industry which continues to play a significant role in the district’s fortunes.
