Opera HouseThe Oamaru Opera House, completed in Oamaru limestone to architect J.M. Forrester's design by local contractors H. Winsley and Son and costing some 10600 pounds, opened on 7 October 1907. The double storey facade housed the Oamaru Borough Council offices on the ground floor (until 1989); upstairs were law offices as well as the Council Chamber (the latter used till 1994). The Chamber and the auditorium of this Historic Places Trust Category II building are noted for their fine plasterwork. The Opera House has a rich history and has hosted every type of civic function as well as theatre, ballet, concerts, cinema and boxing.
