Oamaru Harbour

Just a short walk from the historic precinct, Oamaru Harbour is one of the best surviving examples of a deep water Victorian/Edwardian port that has survived relatively intact. The harbour is registered as a site of National Significance with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The harbour is home to Sumpters Wharf (1884) and several old buildings. At the base of the wharf are two buildings, one of which was the place a message was sent to the world that Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s party was lost in the Antarctic in 1912.

Just over the road, a collection of buildings known as the Red Sheds, formerly used by the Oamaru Harbour Board, have been repaired.
They contain a traditional woodworker, a forge and a stone carver. There are plans for further craft development in this area.
