Cape Wanbrow Military SiteThose with an interest in military history will enjoy the chance to visit a former gun emplacement at Cape Wanbrow. The 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour suddenly brought the war much closer to home and defending the local coastline was given new impetus. Local territorial troops were mobilised, the National Reserve went into camp at Oamaru Racecourse, service in the Home Guard became compulsory and Cape Wanbrow became a military area and was closed to the public. Approval was given to establish and build a gun emplacement, battery observation post, magazine and other camp buildings a year later. By July 3, 1942 the camp was ready to house members of a gun crew and auxiliary troops. At its peak the camp had two officers, 40 N.C.Os and enlisted men plus one attached civilian medic. Over the years, the Cape Wanbrow Military Area has been partially restored and a 25-pounder gun/howitzer sited in the original gun emplacement. A tack to the area ensures easy access.
